A strong work bench is the basic piece of equipment needed to produce good work. The working surface must be at a easy height or planing, sawing and chiseling become strenuous jobs. The top itself should be a solid piece of hardwood, such as 50 mm thick beech or birch, firmly attached to the supporting table design and supporting a strong vice.
1. A well which will support planes and chisels etc., when temporarily not in use is a vital feature of a good bench. If a small lipping is screwed at the end of it, a plane can be rested without damaged.
2. A hardwood bench stop which can be set.
3. A good bench may have storage units fixed and firmly made. The heavy sectioned softwood timber used being mortise and tenoned together and the through joints being wedged.
4. fitted units for storing small work and the basic tool kit ( commonly at the ends of the bench) help to keep the workshop tidy.
